Archaeillogical IIV--Marfa, TX 2019
On October 11, 2019, Brandon Lomax activated a decaying domestic space for a faux archaeological dig in the regionally-isolated town of Marfa, Texas. An abandoned adobe house was the setting for this immersive, seven-room installation. Lomax’s figural sculptures were placed in conversation with the dirt floors and crumbling walls of one of the oldest adobe structures in town. Lomax exhibited works from his Population and Archive series, and debuted a large-scale piece entitled Matriarch.
The work engages with ideas of time logic, socio-political inequality, empathy and the human condition. The site’s interaction with the sun via a severely decaying roof challenged traditional notions of time and provided a variable viewing experience based on light and weather conditions. The final night culminated with a full moon viewing at midnight.
Guided docent tours of the Archaeillogical site were available throughout the weekend. The show was attended by art luminaries and touted as a meritous project within the larger context of the weekend--the Chinati Foundation fundraiser that brings regional and global collectors to Marfa annually.
